While the United Nation's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change says aviation contributes just two percent of the world's CO2 emissions, airplane emissions are increasing by about three percent every year.

Responding to a growing public demand for environmentally sensitive policies and individual responsibility, numerous airlines are entering the field with their own efforts to reduce their substantial carbon footprints.

So far these programs haven't made a huge difference, perhaps because of their voluntary nature. But every little bit helps, says Jena Thompson, executive director of The Conservation Fund's Go Zero program. "It's an awareness of behavior, that everyone produces CO2, and of the small things you can do to make a difference," she says.

Airlines and their programs include:

Carrier: British Airways
Program: Voluntary donation varying by destination.

Carrier: Continental Airlines
Program: Voluntary passenger contribution to Sustainable Travel International.

Carrier: Silverjet
Program: Fee included with each ticket sold, passengers can opt-out if they choose.

London’s Heathrow Airport officially unveiled its new £4.3 billion Terminal last week after seven years of construction.   It will exclusively only serve British Airways customers and will commence operations from March 27.  The new terminal boasts 112 shops and restaurants, a first class lounge cinema, and will also feature high tech equipment such as X-Ray machines that will be able to process passengers without having them remove their shoes and belts.

The new terminal will include a 1,640 foot long main building at the west end of Heathrow that will process all domestic and short-haul flights, and the two nearby satellite buildings will handle all long-haul services.  Passengers will be able to connect to both buildings via an underground shuttle.

The Terminal was constructed by British airports operator BAA in order to prepare for the 2012 London Games.

Washington area travelers will soon be able to speed more quickly through airport security if they are willing to pay a fee, provide personal information to the government and allow their fingerprints and eyes to be scanned at checkpoints.

The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority, which operates Reagan National and Dulles International airports, awarded a contract on January 16, to a company that operates the federal government's security program, which is known as Registered Traveler.

The initiative should start in the spring, said representatives of the company, Verified Identity Pass of New York. The company operates registered traveler programs at 11 airports nationwide, chief executive Steve Brill said.

The Transportation Security Administration said about 65,000 people participate in the registered traveler program.

Brill said the company was excited to enter the market, adding that 2,000 people in the Washington area have already signed up to join the company's program called Clear. Participation costs $128 a year, including a fee for a government background check.
