AIRLINES FLY INTO NEW YEAR WITH SALES
(source: USA Today)

A wave of fare sales has spread across the airline industry in the early days of the new year.

AirTran Airways is offering a nationwide fare sale with one-way fares starting as low as $39. The fares, available for purchase through January 15, are good for travel to and from Florida and San Juan, Puerto Rico, through March 11, while all other sale fares are good for travel through May 20. Virgin America also announced a fare sale for travel through June 10 to all of the cities the carrier serves. New York-based JetBlue Airways said it is offering a fare sale involving more than 40 destinations in the Northeast, Florida, California and the Caribbean.

Other carriers that have launched fare sales recently include Southwest Airlines — for travel between January 15 and April 30; American Airlines — for travel within the US between January 14 and March 4, and between March 5 and April 30 at slightly higher fares; and United Airlines — for travel within the US from January 14 to March 4 and for travel to several foreign destinations as late as April 30. The fare sales just announced do not affect fees for baggage or other services charged by some of the carriers.

The U.S. Transportation Security Administration is putting some finishing touches on its next-generation passenger prescreening system, Secure Flight, to pave the way for a full rollout this summer. In October 2008, TSA announced the final rules for the program, which shifts the responsibility of watchlist matching from airlines to the government. However, carriers and travel agencies under the program have to collect a passenger's full name, date of birth and gender at the time of reservation.

TSA administrator Kip Hawley this week told BTN, "From the technology perspective it is ready to go. In January, carriers have legal authority to ask their customers for information. In March, those who are collecting the information will send it to us. In August, they all will send us the information in the proper format and we'll do the watchlist matching.”

The systems are being tested right now. "When we get the first feeds from the airlines that go first," Hawley said, "that's the real test."

United Airline’s new fully flat business class seat is now on the majority of its B767 fleet, with 13 of its 21 aircraft now fitted. Completion is scheduled for May 2009, plus new routes for 2009. In addition to the new seats, the cabin has been refreshed to be quieter and more discreet and the food and beverage offering has been changed.

In addition, it was confirmed that the B777 fleet will also have a new economy seat to allow for the new Inflight Entertainment system to be installed. In Spring 2009 will come the return of London to Denver with 11 services each week out of London Heathrow, with a fourth daily Washington service in place for the summer schedule. Beginning March 27, 2009, there will be Moscow to Washington Dulles service using a newly configured B767 and on April 20, Geneva to Washington will also be added, taking the total number of transatlantic services to 31 each week.
