SOUTHWEST TO FLY FROM LOGAN
(source: Harvard Crimson)
Southwest Airlines recently announced that it would begin flying out of Boston Logan International Airport this Fall.
Southwest Airlines Spokesman Brad Hawkins said that airfares will remain comparable when service begins at Logan in the Fall. He said that Southwest is able to begin the two-gate operation in Boston because of an effort to optimize use of available airplanes.
Southwest has not yet announced specific service details, saying only that it will only offer a “conservative number of flights” in a press release announcing the change.
The Dallas-based company has been serving both Manchester-Boston and TF Green Airport in Providence for over a decade. It currently operates in 64 cities across 32 states with 3,200 flights a day.

BILL INTRODUCED TO PUT SLOT MACHINES AT BWI
(source: USA Today)
With the bidding process off to a shaky start for five slots parlors in Maryland, a state delegate has introduced a bill to place slots inside BWI-Marshall Airport. The bill would allow a slots parlor to be opened inside the airport terminal with up to 3,000 machines. Voters would have to approve it as an amendment to the state constitution.
Potential operators would have until April 2011 to apply for a license with the Maryland Video Lottery Facility Location Commission.
The bill is sponsored by Democratic Delegate Eric Bromwell of Baltimore County. It has 10 co-sponsors, all of but one from Baltimore County. The airport is located in Anne Arundel County, but no Anne Arundel lawmakers have signed onto the bill.
US AIRWAYS TO STOP CHARGING FOR ONBOARD SODAS, COFFEE
(source: Bloomberg.com)
Beginning March 1, US Airways Group Inc., the only major domestic airline to charge for sodas, coffee and bottled water, said it’s dropping the fees because they have become a competitive disadvantage.
The change is a retreat from US Airways’ “a la carte” pricing in which passengers pay more for any services beyond the basic fare. US Airways has said it expects to reap as much as $500 million this year from the fees, including extra costs for select seats and a plan to sell pillows and blankets.
While US Airways remains “firmly committed” to the a la carte strategy, “it is a work in progress,” CEO Doug Parker said.
