TRAVEL BOOSTS BUSINESSES AND THE ECONOMY Survey results released by the American Gaming Association (AGA) indicate that the vast majority of America's business travelers think business trips are crucial to the health of their employers. "For the 62% of Americans who have attended an out-of-town meeting or convention for work, 87% say it is important to running a strong business," said Peter D. Hart, Chairman of Peter D. Hart Research Associates. In addition, 87% of Americans think encouraging people to travel recreationally within the U.S. could improve the country's economic landscape. "Without question, these are challenging times, but urging Americans to get back on the road can stimulate our national economy," said Frank J. Fahrenkopf, Jr., president and CEO of the AGA. LEGROOM IN TRAVELER BUDGETS A suddenly sweet wave of deeply discounted airfares—prices on some routes out of New York area airports are 50% lower than last year—offer a rare bright spot for corporate budgets. And it's not so bad for local airports, or even some airlines. Some of the biggest fare cuts are on flights between New York City and Europe. Continental has round-trip flights between Newark and Dublin for just $310, a 52% decline in price from last year. On the domestic front, Delta has round-trip flights to Las Vegas for $215, a 19% discount. Prices on flights to San Francisco on JetBlue and American, now $231 round-trip, are down 29% from last year. “It's probably the cheapest time in a decade to travel,” says Rick Seaney, chief executive of FareCompare.com. JETBLUE EYEING MORE INTERNATIONAL PARTNERS JetBlue Airways Corp. will seek out more international partners, as it looks for ways to attract new customers without hefty investments. CEO Dave Barger said he is "quite optimistic" the company can form new international partnerships and begin to "take advantage of the global landscape." JetBlue recently entered a strategic alliance with Irish carrier Aer Lingus that allows passengers to fly on the same ticket using both carriers' networks. It has similar partnerships with minority stake holder Lufthansa Airlines and Lufthansa-owned Swiss Airlines. "(Transcontinental routes) are core to this company and we are going to defend them," Barger said adding that JetBlue's North-South routes remain a priority as well.
