AIRLINES IMPROVE FOR 1ST TIME IN 5 YEARS Airline performance improved in 2008 for the first time in five years, according to an annual airline quality report. The survey, conducted by two veteran industry experts, ranks the 17 biggest U.S. airlines based on baggage handling, on-time arrivals, denied boardings and customer complaints. Data came from U.S. Department of Transportation reports and opinion surveys of more than 5,000 frequent travelers on the report's criteria. Each airline received an overall rating based on the four criteria. OMNI HOTELS EXPANDING LOYALTY BENEFITS Omni Hotels is expanding its loyalty program, adding a new tier for its most frequent guests and new benefits to existing tiers and allowing guests to earn free stays. Omni Select Guest has eschewed the traditional point-accrual format, instead giving preferred guests certain service privileges during stays based on their level in the program. Omni has added a new black level in addition to the existing gold and platinum level for guests. Benefits for the black tier, which is reached after 20 nights or 11 stays with Omni, include early check-in and late checkout, unlimited complimentary pressing and a 15% food and beverage discount at all Omni properties. Omni also is adding benefits to its gold and platinum tiers. Preferred guests already are allowed to earn airline miles, but under the new structure, they also can opt to earn a free night after staying 10 nights. Omni also is introducing a temporary "stay for business and come back for pleasure" benefit, in which travelers with one paid night's stay get a complimentary weekend night at any Omni property in the United States, Canada or Mexico from May 23 to September 6. ECONOMIC BLUES DON’T FADE RISE OF GREEN TRAVEL MANAGEMENT Green travel management has not waned despite a soured economy and travel buyers' focus increasingly turning to finding cost savings. Buyers have made environmental awareness part of such broader travel-curbing demand management initiatives as remote conferencing deployment, and suppliers' green credentials continue to mature. According to a recent BTN survey of 197 corporate travel buyers, 39% said they consider such issues in their buying processes, up from 29% in 2008. Meanwhile, travel buyers now are supplying carbon-footprint data to other departments within the organization, including senior managers with sustainability or corporate social responsibility roles who are dealing with the potential effects of coming U.S. and existing European legislation to curb air travel carbon emissions. While some buyers are carrying their green efforts into their recession-era travel management practices, others are not as successful. According to a new AirPlus International survey, 19.4% of 139 travel buyers in North America and Europe said the economy has overshadowed their existing green travel initiatives. Conversely, 31% said the economy has increased commitment or awareness of their green travel efforts.
