The Lawyers’ Travel Service’s Executive Vice President, Michael Steiner was interviewed by travel journalist Joe Sharkey of the New York Times.

Airfares are up; seating capacity is down; demand so far has not dropped; and now, with rumored airline mergers, even more constriction may lie ahead.

“You want someone on the phone who can not only deal with the airline you’re having a problem with, but who can also take a look at a variety of solutions, including something creative, outside the box, to get you from Point A to Point B, even if it means going through Point C,” [Mr. Steiner] said.

DELTA ENABLES ONLINE CHECK-IN FOR INTERNATIONAL FLIGHTS

Delta customers can now check in online for all international flights departing the U.S. and some flights departing other countries.

Currently, Delta customers departing Dublin and Shannon, Ireland; Paris and Nice, France; Dubai, United Arab Emirates; Copenhagen, Denmark; Tokyo; and Liberia and San Jose, Costa Rica, can check in online.

Also, flyers can now check bags for domestic and international flights at Delta.com. When they arrive at the airport, customers who checked bags online can stop at a Delta baggage-drop location before heading to security.

State parks are not foremost on the minds of many meeting planners, but they are a great alternative for anyone who wants a fresh environment for a meeting. Facilities range from a one-room schoolhouse at Utah's Camp Floyd/Stagecoach Inn State Park to mansions and full-service lodges like the one at Alabama's Lake Guntersville State Park.

"State park facilities are usually very affordable, and the surroundings are usually beautiful, quiet and secluded," says Vicki Hawarden, vice president of Meeting Professionals International, a trade group of meeting planners and suppliers.

Facilities and equipment, however, might be "more outdated than at a major hotel," and state parks are often in remote areas, Hawarden says. "They are not usually right by a major airport, requiring some drive time, and your cellphone or BlackBerry might not work." The price of renting state park meeting facilities, though, is good news for many companies struggling through a weak economy.
