Delta and Northwest Airlines' merged program may not be much different from the old ones, and the miles you've banked flying with both airlines are safe. In fact, redeeming them may get easier if the announced merger of the two airlines is completed later this year as planned.

"Customers will be able to fly to more destinations and will have more flight choices," Delta spokeswoman Susan Chana Elliot said Wednesday.

Both airlines already belong to SkyTeam, an alliance of several airlines, which allows customers to earn and redeem frequent flier miles on partner airlines. For example, miles earned flying Delta regularly can be redeemed now for a Northwest flight.

Both programs have many similarities, but there are some notable differences. "We're going to be looking at best practices from both companies to create an industry leading frequent flier program," Elliot said.

United Airlines said this week it was hiking the fee it charges passengers to change tickets from $100 to $150 in an effort to combat high fuel costs.

It also added a Saturday night stay requirement on all tickets where it competes head-to-head with other legacy carriers, which will affect 65% of all the markets it serves. This will have the most impact on business travelers, who typically don't want to spend a Saturday night in their destination.

U.S. airlines have announced a number of fare hikes, fuel surcharges and fee increases recently as they battle higher fuel prices and a weakening economy.

"In an environment where fuel prices are averaging almost $120 a barrel, we are facing a cost increase of more than $2 billion this year,” the spokeswoman for United Airlines said in a statement. "Making these changes is another example of how we need to continue to adapt to today's tough market realities and find new ways to generate revenue."

MORE AIRPORTS TO USE 'WHOLE BODY IMAGING' MACHINES

Some travelers at key airports in New York and Los Angeles may be put through machines that see through clothing and provide a detailed image of a person's body. It's the first expansion of the program since the machines were first put to the test in Phoenix, Arizona.

The 'whole body imaging' machines have sparked complaints from privacy advocates, but the Transportation Security Administration says that it has taken steps to protect individuals' privacy and that 90% of the travelers in Phoenix preferred the imaging machine to a pat-down.

The millimeter wave machines are being rolled out at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York and Los Angeles International Airport in California this month, TSA Administrator Kip Hawley told Congress last week.

The TSA will use two different methods at JFK and LAX as they study the most effective way to use the machines.
