AMERICAN AIRLINES FLIGHT CANCELLATIONS
American Airlines has cancelled more than 1,000 flights today in order to complete reinspections on its fleet of MD-80 jets. Nearly 300 flights were cancelled on Tuesday for the same reason.
American had pulled its MD-80s out of service over two days in late March for inspection, canceling nearly 500 flights at that time. A Federal Aviation Administration audit on April 7 showed that the work did not appear to conform to the engineering change order that details how modifications were to be done.
The Lawyers' Travel Service has generated passenger reports in order to identify, notify and re-accomodate travelers affected by the American Airlines cancellations. We will continue to monitor this situation closely.
BATTLE FOR THE BUSINESS-CLASS TRAVELER
(source: cnn.com)
Airlines are waging a business-class battle to win the loyalty of the lucrative long-haul business traveler, and American legacy carriers face a hard fight, industry analysts and business travelers say.
Lie-flat and flat-bed seats, gourmet food and wine service, vast in-flight entertainment options and other amenities have become standard business-class fare.
"What first class was five or 10 years ago, that's what business class is now becoming," said Matthew Daimler, founder of SeatGuru.com, a Web site that evaluates airline seats.
Joe Brancatelli, editor of JoeSentMe.com, a noncommercial site for business travelers said schedule, price and frequent flier status figure heavily into flight decisions. But as the payoff for frequency programs diminishes, stepping up other offerings is critical to competing for business travelers.
Seat comfort is a hot topic among frequent long-haul business travelers. Flat-bed seats (completely flat and parallel to the floor) and lie-flat seats (completely flat but positioned at a slight angle) are becoming the industry standard.
OAKLAND INTERNATIONAL GETS CLEAR
(source: BTe)
Clear security lanes have opened in Oakland International Airport, the third and final Bay Area airport to take part in the Registered Traveler program. Already, more than 25,000 residents in the area have signed up for the program, which is available for an annual fee of $100, plus a $28 TSA screening fee.
TSA personnel pre-screens potential members and encodes the individual’s biometric data on a card that can then be presented at participating airports for speedy passage through security checkpoints that’s up to 30 percent faster than the typical experience.
