SECURE FLIGHT UPDATE
(source: The Lawyers' Travel Service)

Secure Flight is a mandatory airline passenger prescreening program developed by the Department of Homeland Security. Secure Flight will begin conducting uniform prescreening of passenger information against federal government watch lists for domestic and international flights. Under the Secure Flight rule, airlines will request additional information (i.e., full name, date of birth, gender) from travelers when making a reservation to fly within, into, out of, or over the continental United States:

Q. What are the responsibilities under the Secure Flight rules?

A. It is the airline's responsibility to provide Secure Flight Passenger Data to TSA prior to a boarding pass being issued. Although the Secure Flight ruling requires airlines to provide the Secure Flight Data to TSA, The Lawyers' Travel Service will collect this information during the reservation process to better serve our customers and provide a smooth travel experience at check-in.

Q. Is the traveler required to provide the data to the travel consultant?

A. The traveler can refuse to disclose this information while making the reservation. The booking can still be made, however this information will be required in order for the boarding pass to be issued. By not providing the information in advance, it could cause delays during the check-in process.

Q. How do I ensure that I can get my boarding pass in advance as I do today?

A. By providing this information in advance, most passengers will not experience any differences from the way they traveled before. It is important to ensure the data provided exactly matches the document presented at time of check-in.

Q. How should the passenger's name appear on the ticket?

A. Name data transmitted to the air carriers and TSA must match the name on the valid, non-expired, government or state issued photo ID shown at the airport. This could include documents such as State ID card, Driver's License or Passport.

Q. Are all passengers required to provide Secure Flight Passenger Data?

A. All passengers including minors (17 and under) must provide full name, date of birth and gender. The data must match the data on the document presented at the airport. The rule states that if the individual is "under 18 years of age and does not have a verifying identity document, TSA may, on a case-by-case basis, authorize the minor or an adult accompanying the minor to state the individual's full name and date of birth in lieu of providing a verifying document."

Q. What are the relevant dates for the implementation of the prescreening process by air carriers?

A.

- May 15, 2009 - Air carriers must have the ability to send passenger's full name and itinerary to TSA.

- August 15, 2009 – Air carriers must have the ability to collect, store and send Secure Flight data to TSA for all domestic flights.

- October 31, 2009 – Air carriers must have the ability to collect, store and send Secure Flight data to TSA for all international flights.

Q. When will The Lawyers' Travel Service begin requesting the Secure Flight Passenger Data?

A. We will begin collecting this information in June and July in order to meet the August 15th deadline for domestic travel. We will advise more on this process in future communications.

Q. Will the Secure Flight Passenger Data be safe?

A. Yes. This information will be stored within The Lawyers' Travel Service network which is a secured environment.

Q. What is TSA's current timeline for full implementation of Secure Flight Passenger Data?

A. 100% of all domestic commercial flights by early 2010. 100% of all international commercial flights by the end of 2010. TSA updates on the protocol of this process and related deadlines are continuous and fluid. Thus we will send regular updates as we receive information.

TSA GIVES NEW ADVICE FOR AIRPORT SECURITY

In case you thought you finally had the airport security drill down pat, the Transportation Security Administration is now advising passengers to place their shoes directly on the X-ray machine belt, not in a bin. The change allows screeners to get a clearer look at suspect footwear, a spokeswoman says.
