EMBRACING AIRPORT TECHNOLOGY CAN SAVE YOU TIME AND MONEY
(source: USA Today)

Welcome to the 21st century, passengers.

Self-serve ticket kiosks and other electronic screens and gadgets aren't exactly new at airports around the world, but some travelers are hesitant — maybe a little scared — about using them. They prefer the old-fashioned comfort of face-to-face contact with an agent, even if waiting in line slows them down.

But there are a growing number of ways to cut time and hassle out of a trip to the airport, from new kiosks to boarding passes scanned directly from your cellphone screen. There is, airports insist, no reason to be afraid.

Using electronic methods on your way to the gate can also save you money, as more airlines begin charging for contact with a living, breathing human.

Here are just a few examples:

Checking (and paying for) luggage

Many travelers know they can check in online, or at the airport, using a kiosk. But many don't know they can check their bags the same way. Simply pay online or at a terminal with your credit card, then drop your bags off at the "Web Bag Drop" counters available through some airlines. Nearly all airlines have a representative that will check your boarding pass, grab your bag and send you on your way.

Upgrades

No sweet talk or bribes required. Most major airlines now offer upgrade opportunities, if they are available, through the Web or an airport kiosk. Payment, as with baggage, is just a swipe away. Another bonus: The kiosk never forgets to let you know when you're eligible for a promotion to more spacious seating.

The next frontier

Mobile phone scanning technology will be the fastest-growing platform in airport technology as more people switch from traditional paper boarding passes. The technology is now available in several major cities — including New York, Atlanta, Houston, Las Vegas and Boston — but it may be slow to spread because security personnel must be taught how to read and verify boarding passes on cell phones.

The next big leap on the airport technology will be touch-screen maps of airports that passengers can personalize and print out with food options, security lines, and gates. The prediction is they will appear in major airports in three to six months.

Sorry, there's still no electronic solution for taking your shoes off to get through security.

AMTRAK CUTS SOME FARES IN THE EAST FOR SUMMER
(source: Wall Street Journal)

Amtrak is cutting fares by 25% on some Eastern trains this summer as the national passenger railroad looks to boost demand during the recession.

The discount runs from June 2 through Sept. 3. It applies to those taking regional trains on the Northeast Corridor, which runs from Washington to Boston. The discount also is available from Washington to Newport News, Va.

In addition, Amtrak is extending a February price cut on its higher-speed Acela service, which runs from Washington to Boston.

Passengers must make their reservations two weeks in advance in order to get the lower fares.

Amtrak carried a record 28.7 million passengers last fiscal year, but ridership is down this year as businesses cut back on travel and because of lower gas prices.

NEW YORK STATE SALES TAX ON TRANSPORTATION IMPLEMENTED
(source: Black Car News )

On May 22, 2009, the State of New York approved a new sales tax on chauffeured car services that went into effect June 1, 2009. This additional tax is a part of New York Governor David Paterson's 2009-2010 state budget.

The new statewide sales tax of 4% will be applied to all pickups and drop offs within New York State. An additional local sales tax will be charged based upon the pickup county. For example, pickups located in the five boroughs of New York City will add an additional 4.375%, for a total of 8.375%. Other New York State counties could tax as high as 4.75%, totaling 8.75%. Trips originating or ending outside of the state of New York will not be taxed. This tax only applies to chauffeured driven vehicles with capacities of 14 passengers or under, and does not apply to mini-buses or motor-coaches.
