SPIRIT AIRLINES CANCELS FLIGHTS THROUGH THURSDAY
(source: CNN.com)
Spirit Airlines has canceled all flights through Thursday, adding another day to cancellations that started last Saturday as a result of a pilots' union strike.
Customers will receive flight credits for the full purchase amount for unflown flights as well as a $100 credit toward future flights. Passengers may also opt for a refund.
Hundreds of Spirit pilots walked off their jobs Saturday morning after negotiations over pay with the low-cost carrier hit a stalemate.
The two sides had worked through the night to reach an agreement but could not resolve their differences.
"Immediately after 5:00 a.m., the Spirit Pilot Master Executive Council, as authorized by our pilots, called for and instituted a lawful strike against our management," said Capt. Sean Creed, head of the Spirit unit of the pilots' union Airline Pilots Association.
The airline initially canceled all flights for Saturday and, in a message posted on its website, promised passengers a refund or a flight credit.
The Lawyers' Travel Service has generated passenger reports in order to identify, notify and re-accommodate travelers who may be affected. We will continue to monitor this situation closely.

AIRLINE CREDIT CARDS DANGLE PERKS TO LURE NEW CUSTOMERS
(source: USA TODAY)
"The ever-changing world of airline fares and fees is getting a little more confusing -- but maybe a lot cheaper -- thanks to the newest travel perk: free baggage check with an airline's credit card." That's from The Detroit News, which takes at look at some of the latest gimmicks being rolled out to entice consumers to sign up for airline-branded credit cards.
Continental and Delta are among the latest to waive checked-bag fees for customers booking using the carriers' branded credit cards. The offer covers up to as many as nine people traveling on the card member's reservation, allowing each of those to avoid bag fees that start at $25 per bag.
The News writes "it sounds like a good deal, but there's a catch: another fee. In the case of Continental, it's the $85 annual fee for the OnePass Plus card, and for Delta it's $95 for the Gold Skymiles card."
Of course, travelers can quickly recoup that fee by avoiding bag fees on as few as two round-trip flights. On the other hand, the perk is unnecessary for others.
For example, elite-level frequent fliers are exempt from checked bag fees. Or, as the News points out, "if you don't travel with luggage often enough -- maybe once every other year -- it's cheaper for one or two travelers to pay the baggage fees instead of shelling out for annual credit card memberships."
Either way, expect airlines to increasingly turn to special credit-card perks in the future. Daniel Ray, editor in chief of CreditCards.com, predicts to the News that the trend will accelerate as carriers look to build customer loyalty while they also broaden their a la carte fee structure.

DELTA FURTHERS PREMIUM SEATING ON REGIONAL JETS
(source: Business Travel News)
Delta Air Lines this fall will offer first class on every domestic flight longer than 750 miles, continuing an effort to bring premium seating to its regional jet service.
The move will add first class to about 50 routes, including service from every Delta and former Northwest Airlines hub, after Delta finishes retrofitting its Delta Connection 70-seat Bombardier CRJ700 aircraft to join its other two-class regional jets.
The two-class Delta Connection jets will offer between nine and 12 seats in first class and between 56 and 64 seats in economy.
Delta said the move is part of an ongoing investment in service and amenities. "Business customers who appreciate the option of traveling in a First Class cabin and frequent flyers who appreciate the opportunity to upgrade will particularly benefit from the significant expansion of two-class service on longer Delta Connection flights," said Delta executive vice president for network planning and revenue management Glen Hauenstein in a statement.
In recent years, American Airlines and United Airlines also have reconfigured some regional jets to provide first- or business-class service to target premium travelers and establish consistent domestic service offerings.
