DELTA TO REDUCE INTERNATIONAL CAPACITY
(source: BTN Online)

Delta Air Lines beginning in September will reduce international capacity by 15 percent—5 percentage points higher than its previous outlook issued in March, the carrier announced.

Delta plans to cut transatlantic capacity by 20 percent beginning in September. Including the 15 percent overall international reduction, Delta said systemwide capacity would be 10 percent lower than in 2008, reflecting a 6 percent reduction in domestic capacity.

Delta said it would suspend nonstop service from Atlanta to Seoul; nonstop flights from Cincinnati to Frankfurt and to London-Gatwick; and service from New York JFK to Edinburgh. Delta has yet to further specify the details of the capacity realignment.

The carrier also said it would reduce weekly frequencies from Atlanta and Detroit to Mexico City, while "postponing some previously planned seasonal service between non-hub cities and Mexican beach destinations due to the impact of the H1N1 virus on customers' travel plans," according to a company statement.

Despite the cuts, the carrier this year plans to expand to more than 20 new international markets, including Los Angeles-Sydney, Salt Lake City-Tokyo, Detroit-Shanghai, New York-Prague, Pittsburgh-Paris and Atlanta-Johannesburg.

DOT REPORTS ON-TIME ARRIVAL IMPROVEMENT
(source: BTN Online)

The U.S. Department of Transportation today reported the largest domestic carriers posted better on-time performance in April than the previous month and the same period in 2008.

The 19 largest U.S. carriers posted an on-time arrival rate of 79.1 percent for the full month of April, compared with the 77.7 percent on time in April 2008 and 78.4 percent in March 2009. Carriers also posted fewer cancellations in April, at 1.5 percent, compared with 1.7 percent in April 2008 and 2.1 percent in March 2009.

The DOT inspector general in a report last month showed carriers last year improved their on-time performances over 2007 and continue to show improvements this year over 2008. However, those gains largely are attributed to reductions in domestic airline capacity, scheduling practices at airlines, new airline fees and declining passenger traffic.

FAA CALLS FOR NEW PILOT SAFETY RULES
(source: Travel Weekly)

The Federal Aviation Administration is looking to curb the number of flight hours for pilots to help prevent pilot fatigue and the agency also may ask Congress to require airlines to obtain the full training histories of pilots before hiring them.

Pilot fatigue has long been a concern of industry safety experts and pilot training came under fire in the wake of the Feb. 12 crash of Continental Connection flight 3407 near Buffalo, N.Y., which killed 50 people.

The FAA and industry representatives gathered in Washington on Monday for a safety summit to discuss the crash and other safety concerns.
