American Airlines is reserving some seat upgrades for the first few rows of coach for flyers to purchase at airport kiosks only.

The airline is calling the product Express Seats and is pitching it as a benefit for passengers who want to get on and off the plane before the rest of coach. Those who buy an Express seat will board with Group 1 during general boarding.

An Express Seat upgrade costs $19 to $38, depending on flight distance. The option is available for all domestic travel and on flights to and from Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

American said the new policy won't reduce the number of front-cabin coach seats reserved for elite-level members of the airline's loyalty program. American said it will set aside a number of these seats for elite-level flyers on every flight.

American is confident that it won't have any problems selling the upgrades at the airport.

"Based on our experience, people really value these seats," said airline spokesman Tim Smith.

IS THE U.S. TURNING A CORNER ON HIGH-SPEED RAIL?

(source: CNN.com)

For generations, much of the nation has been forced to use cars, buses or pricey aircraft to travel to nearby cities. But this year, Washington opened the door to what may be a historic turning point in regional travel.

The Department of Transportation awarded $8 billion among 31 states to begin developing America's first nationwide high-speed intercity passenger rail service.

Soon, Americans might find themselves rocketing along ribbons of rails at 200 mph.

The federal funding served as a down payment to develop the groundwork for 13 new high-speed rail corridors in the United States.

Funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, these new dollars represent a historic investment in the country's transportation infrastructure. It will help create jobs and transform travel in America, according to a U.S. Department of Transportation official.

"High-speed rail will also revolutionize the way Americans travel by reducing U.S. dependence on foreign oil, lowering harmful carbon emissions, fostering new economic development and giving travelers more choices when it comes to moving around the country," said the official.

Most high-speed rail lines in the United States will be upgraded using existing freight rail rights-of-way, but the project in Florida and portions of California will be built on newly constructed high-speed rail lines, said Nazih Haddad, the chief operating officer for Florida Rail Enterprise.

Trains could reach up to 168 mph on Florida's high-speed line. Estimates from the U.S Department of Transportation say speeds could reach up to 220 mph for some portions of California's rail lines, while most other regions would top 110 mph.

AIRTRAN INCREASES CHECKED-BAG FEE

(source: Business Travel News)

AirTran on Sept. 1 will begin charging $20 for customers to check their first piece of luggage, up from the current $15 fee, the airline said on its website.

Passengers who made their reservations before August 17 would be exempt from the additional fee, AirTran said. The carrier's charge for a second checked bag remains $25.

SECURE FLIGHT PASSENGER DATA DEADLINE APPROACHING

The U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) announced that after November 1, 2010, air passenger reservations without full Secure Flight Passenger Data (SFPD) will be rejected by Secure Flight and will not be processed. This policy will apply to all passenger records regardless of source, aircraft operator, or air carrier.

Effective September 15, 2010, select airlines will prohibit ticket issuance if the passenger's full name, date of birth and gender are not present in the reservation.

To facilitate the collection of the SFPD, The Lawyers' Travel Service has created a secure, encrypted web form which travelers can use to input this information. When the information is submitted, the traveler profile will be updated.
